The International Criminal Court Bar Association (ICCBA) expresses deep concern over the recent Executive Order by the President of the United States seeking to impose sanctions in connection with the work of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Such measures threaten the rule of law and jeopardise the fundamental principles enshrined in the Rome Statute, which has been ratified by 125 states.

The ICCBA stands in solidarity with the ICC, as well as its officials and staff, and reaffirms its commitment to supporting the Court’s mandate to deliver justice, uphold fair trials, and ensure accountability for the most serious crimes under international law. The sanctions pose a direct challenge to the international community's shared commitment to justice. The ICCBA strongly urges for their immediate reversal.

As an independent organisation funded by its members, the ICCBA represents defence and victims’ counsel and their teams before the ICC. It recognises the crucial role of these dedicated legal professionals, who come from all corners of the world, in representing victims and the accused before the Court. Their work must likewise not be undermined by external pressures.

The ICCBA calls on all States Parties to the Rome Statute, as well as relevant international organisations, including the European Commission, to stand united with the ICC and take concrete actions to preserve the independence and capacity of the Court. It is imperative to safeguard the Court’s mandate to deliver justice, and the principles of the Rome Statute.
