On 24 January 2025, the International Criminal Court opened its judicial year. The President of the ICCBA, Mr. Philippe Larochelle, the ICC President, the Prosecutor, and the Director of the Division of Judicial Services, provided statements. The keynote speech was given by H.E. Dineke de Groot, President of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands.
In his speech, Mr. Larochelle highlighted the vital role of the Court in addressing the world’s most egregious crimes and emphasized the shared mission of all those working within the ICC system. He focused on the importance of unity within the ICC community. “Today, I want to speak about the things that unite us, rather than the things that divide us,” he stated. “Because at the end of the day we are here because we believe that this Court can contribute to making the world a better place”.
Acknowledging the challenges facing the ICC, Mr. Larochelle spoke about the resilience of the institution and its supporters in the face of external pressures, including sanctions and attempts to undermine its work. He also addressed the need for ongoing support for the Court, particularly in countering efforts to delegitimize its mission. He emphasized the ICCBA’s role in fostering alliances and promoting the values of international justice. “With, and through our members, the ICCBA is reaching out to Bar associations, universities, and NGOs in every corner of the world to continue garnering support for the Court", he said.
The President concluded his speech with a call for dignity and recognition for all those who work within the ICC system, including defense and victims’ teams, who often face significant challenges.
